Curriculum Overview

At Wolfson Hillel we follow the national curriculum, underpinned with our own school curriculum.  Because we know that children learn best when subjects are delivered in a relevant and meaningful context, we teach the national curriculum creatively through topics.

The Hillel school curriculum is integrated into everything we do at Hillel.  Its roots lie in ensuring that children enjoy their time at school, take active responsibility for and pride in their own learning in the classroom and play well and have fun in the playground. Through three aspects – Myself, My Relationships and My Learning – teachers give children opportunities to actively develop these skills.

The school’s Jewish Studies curriculum seeks to transmit skills, knowledge and understanding with Jewish values at its core. The curriculum content is built around five key modules which are: Ivrit, Torah, Jewish way of life, The Jewish year and Tefillah.

As English permeates all our learning, its core functions, reading and writing are taught as much as possible through the half-termly topics. Children will read a range of text types in fiction, non-fiction and poetry throughout the school year and have opportunities to write and communicate creatively in a range of genres for different audiences. Guided reading sessions are run daily with separate grammar, handwriting and spelling lessons to underpin the core skills required for fluent literacy. In EYFS and KS1, daily phonics sessions run, with catch up programmes in KS2 for those pupils requiring additional input.

Maths is taught daily and discretely. Children develop skills in arithmetic, written calculations and apply their knowledge to solve mathematical problems. They are encouraged to explain how they worked it out and make explicit links with other aspects of maths which they have learnt. In KS1 lessons are taught in a whole class setting with differentiated activities to extend and support pupils.  In KS2 maths is streamed. In Year 3 and Year 4 it is set across both year groups in order to maximise learning opportunities for all pupils. In Years 5 and Year 6, each year group is split into three classes to accelerate learning for those more able pupils, while ensuring that every pupil has a solid understanding of the primary maths curriculum before heading to secondary school.

Science is taught in weekly blocks every half term. Children will have the opportunity to classify, observe and experiment with a particular aspect from their year group’s science curriculum. Children learn how to set up experiments, analyse their results and write up their conclusions.

History in KS2 is also taught in blocks across the year. This is one of the highlights of the year when children work in vertical age groupings learning about a particular time period. It is also a chance to make new friends and learn how to work with others.

Geography and computing are taught through the topics where possible as is art and design. Music is taught in each class weekly by a specialist music teacher.  PE lessons are held twice a week, for most of the year, both outside and in our dedicated gym room. MFL is taught as Ivrit, through our JS programme.

The children in Nursery and Reception learn through the Early Years  Foundation Stage Curriculum. Daily opportunities are provided for the children to develop skills in the seven areas of learning through the context of teacher led topics and child initiated activities.
